Biography
Tjodalv started his first band in 1989, together with Galder (Old Man's Child). The band mainly performed covers of Metallica and Slayer classics. At this stage of his career Tjodalv played guitar, both bass and lead. Under the name Requiem, the band released their first ever demo in 1993. All the songs were self-composed and were influenced by the popular death metal trend of the time. The band would later go on and change their name to Old Man`s Child.
His hunger for music was ever present. Tjodalv was in at the beginning of Old Man’s Child, and he continued the trend, when together with Silenoz and Shagrath, he formed the influential Dimmu Borgir. By 1993 Tjodalv was playing drums, however his contribution to Dimmu Borgir’s 1995 album ‘For All Tid’ was as a guitarist. Having to juggle with two bands at the same time eventually came to an end in 1996 when Tjodalv quit Old Man’s Child (after recording the MCD ‘In the Shades of Life’ and the album ‘Born of the Flickering’) to concentrate fully as the drummer in Dimmu Borgir.
In 1998, whilst still with Dimmu Borgir, Tjodalv once again felt the need to spread his wings and got together with Cyrus (Session: Satyricon, Old Man’s Child) for some song writing sessions. These sessions were to prove the inspiration for a new band - Susperia.
Tjodalv eventually parted ways with Dimmu Borgir in 1999 to give his attention totally to Susperia, but not before hooking up once again with Old Man's Child, to play drums on the album ‘Revelation 666’.
Today he is more active than ever, when he has now joined Old Man’s Child and return to the stage in 2025 after many years in hibernation. He has also joined his old band Dimmu Borgir for some special guest appearances since 2019, recording and live performances with Susperia, Abyssic and Thyruz.
Throughout his varied career Tjodalv has been influenced and inspired by all spectrums of the rock genre. He is a respected musician within his field and is well known for his precise no-nonsense style of drumming, as well as his trademark double bass drum attack.
